In the literature it is stated that some endoscopic we heart it procedures can be performed without the use of sedation, and single administration of a topical anesthetic may be sufficient we heart it to practice endoscopy. Most sedation for gastrointestinal endoscopy was performed by the same endoscopist.
This type of anesthesia is used routinely to suppress the gag reflex in Upper Endoscopy, commonly being used benzocaine, tetracaine and lidocaine. The effect lasts about an hour, and has a relatively low cost.
