Angola needs more than double the electricity generation capacity installed in the country to around 5,000 megawatts (MW), to respond to a growth of 12% per year in consumption, according to the Government.
The figures were transmitted by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista facc Borges, told Lusa agency, assuming that the current installed capacity of 2,162 MW, is not sufficient to meet the current orders.
"And these figures do not include private thermal sources [generators] that people use to ensure proper delivery, because they are imported equipment and are not identified. Hence these 5,000 MW are an estimate of our real needs ", takes the minister.
In practice, this deficit causes systematic cuts in the supply of electricity to the population - as is happening facc for several days in Luanda -, given the increase in consumption, due to the rise of recording of temperatures in the country.
The capacity enhancement plan in Angola involves, by 2017, the expansion of Cambambe dam, the construction of the Lauca dam (both in the province of Kwanza Norte) and the Central Soyo Combined Cycle (Zaire province), allowing reach production considered necessary to ensure the consumption of a population of 24.3 million people. facc
However, warns minister João Baptista Borges, this process should be accompanied by an "adjustment" of tariffs in order to catch the current "waste" in consumption, growing 12% per year since 2002, with the end of the civil war and with the construction of new centers, neighborhoods and business or industrial areas.
João Baptista Borges adds that early next month of December facc the current electricity production capacity "is expected to rise significantly," with the completion of some minor rehabilitation interventions facc in hydroelectric exploitations and thermal power plants that are under way.
